Jack Barnes Boardwalk

Opened in 1988, the Jack Barnes Boardwalk is a cherished piece of Cairns' heritage, winding through mangrove wetlands of immense environmental, indigenous, educational and tourism value. Over time, the boardwalk had deteriorated, risking the loss of a beloved landmark deeply ingrained in the community.

To honour its reopening and underscore the importance of its restoration, we created a short documentary-style video. Featuring interviews with key individuals, including the original engineer and Jack Barnes's daughter, the video explored the boardwalk's significance and the collaborative efforts that brought it back to life.

The restoration of the Jack Barnes Boardwalk highlighted Cairns Airport's commitment to sustainability and preserving local heritage. By swiftly capturing the restoration story (we began filming within a day), we emphasised the urgency and passion behind saving this essential piece of infrastructure.

Through emotive storytelling and meticulous editing enriched with sound design, the final video became a compelling testament to collective action. It showcased how preserving such landmarks contributes to environmental conservation, cultural continuity, and supports the airport's carbon offset initiatives. This project not only celebrated the boardwalk's revival but also reinforced the profound impact of dedicated community efforts on the region's ecological and cultural landscape.
